So far as the questions raised in the Governor's telegram of the 1st February are concerned, it appears very unlikely that the steel required for their construction would be availa- ble from any source for steamers ready for delivery by the middle of 1918. For the present, therefore, Sir Joseph Maclay is not in a position to pursue further the question of giving new orders to the Company for their existing building glips. As far as the extension of the Dock Company's Shipyard
is concerned, Sir Joseph Maclay regrets that it is not possible
for him to recommend that additional Shipyard machinery should be
supplied from this Country.
A copy of this letter is being sent to the Ministry of
Munitions and to the Foreign Office.
